Works on Paper
Works on paper are the chamber music of pictorial art. A powdery crust of pastel, a bleeding wash of watercolor, a strident accent of a reed pen - all are enjoyed for the ways in which they reveal gestural nuances, intimacy of scale and the interaction of the tactile quality and tone of paper with the line and color of the medium.
Some of the greatest artists were noted for their works on paper. Such painters as Homer, Sargent, La Farge, and W. T. Richards, made unique contributions to the field of watercolor, while the American Pre-Raphaelites, Henry Roderick Newman, John William Hill and John Henry Hill devoted their entire working careers to the medium. Pastel became popular in America in the 1880s with Whistler, Chase, Dewing, and Twachtman all producing extraordinary and highly original works.
From the exquisite perspective drawing of Thomas Eakins to the crisp, incisive portraits of Eastman Johnson and spontaneous monotypes of Maurice Prendergast, it is clear that works on paper offer a whole range of expressive possibilities that cannot be found in other fields. Because attention has only recently been devoted in America to the collection of works on paper, wonderful opportunities still exist for acquiring outstanding examples.
